Research Activities

1. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

THE BEST SPECIALIST CARE SINCE 1992…

The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology was established in the month of January 1992 in a 10x10 feet room with just 11 beds. The department was headed by Dr. K.V. Ashok kumar who underwent fellowships in GI endoscopy and GI surgery from Tata Memorial hospital, Bombay.

The Department has steadily grown to the present status which is recognized across the country. This department boast off being the first of its kind in the entire state of Karnataka including government and private medical institutions.

In the academic front, the following programmes were started, which were all the FIRST’s in the entire state of Karnataka

1. Fellow-ship programme in SGE was started in the year 2005 January as a 2 year course with an annual intake of 2 candidates which has increased to 4 candidates per year at present.

2. Diplomate National Board in Surgical gastroenterology was started in the year 2007 February with an annual intake of 2 candidates

3. M.Ch in Surgical gastroenterology was started in the year 2009 July with an annual intake of 1 candidate and 3 years later (from 2013) the intake was enhanced to 2 candidates per year.

4. Fellowship in intensive care was started in 2015 July.

Regarding hospital services, the following programmes were the FIRST’s to be started in any of the government institutions in Karnataka

1. Shunt surgeries for portal hypertension

2. Multi-organ retrieval

3. Liver transplantation programme - Cadaveric

4. Bariatric programme for morbid obesity and metabolic disease.

As on date 24 fellow’s, 6 DNB and 4 M.Ch candidates, who were trained in our institution, are delivering quality services in the field of surgical gastroenterology across the state. It is a proud moment to state that we have trained assistant and associate professors of General surgery department from KIMS Hubli, VIMS Bellary, MMC Mysore, JSS Mysore, MIMS Mandya, HIMS Hassan, JJMC Davengere apart from trained qualified surgical gastroenterologist in private practice.

It may not be out of place to mention that all the teachers in the present department of surgical gastroenterology, BMCRI were are trained under Dr. K.V. Ashok kumar who was the head and professor of department of gastroenterology.

We, in our department, perform about 6000 endoscopies, colonoscopies and ERCP’s, both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, every year. We provide comprehensive health care with laparoscopic and open surgeries in all the subset of gastrointestinal surgery.

Research activities in our department has led to many research paper and poster publications in many reputed National and international journals and conferences.

3. small bowel , large bowel and rectal surgeries like intestinal resections and anastomosis, procto- colectomy, surgeries for ulcerative colitis like IAPP, etc..

5. Biliary tract surgeries like hepaticojejunostomies for biliary strictures, choledochal cyst excision, CBD exploration, Gall bladder surgeries etc.,

6. pancreatic surgeries like Whipple’s pancreaticoduodenectomy, Frey’s procedure and surgeries for acute and chronic pancreatitis and its complications etc.,
