General Information about the department:

Biochemistry, as a subject, incorporates the study of the structure and function of cellular components, such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and other bio-molecules. This is essential to understand the complex biochemical interactions within the human body both in health and in disease. Knowledge of Biochemistry is vital to understand the Physiology of life.

As preclinical subject, Biochemistry department in Bangalore medical college was established in 1955. The department was disjointed from physiology and a full- fledged separate department came into existence in 1976 as per Medical Council of India norms. Full time laboratory services are extended to Victoria, Vani Vilas, Bowring and Minto hospitals.

MBBS Courses was started in 1955, BDS Courses was in 1964 and M.D. Biochemistry Courses in1989 with 2 seats, increased to 3 seats in 2010 and further increased to 4 in 2014. The department also provides academic support for conducting courses for Nursing & DMLT & BSc MLTstudents.

The Department is recognized by MCI both for Under Graduation(MBBS) and Post-Graduation(MD Biochemistry)

The heads of department from 1955 were

Dr.Satyanarayana.

Dr.Ananthapadmanabhanrao.

Dr.Ramakrishna.V - 1983 to 199,

Dr.Kantharaj - 1990 to 1991,

Dr. G.V. Honnappa – 1991 to 1991(Dec),

Dr. V. Ramakrishna - 1992(Jan) to 1996(June),

Dr.Nirmalkumar –1996(Feb) to 2001(Aug)

Dr.Gurumurthy - 2002 to 2008(Jan)

The curriculum is designed to:

· Train the undergraduate and postgraduate medical students as per the University guidelines.

· Encourage the staff to update the recent biochemical concepts and engage in research activities.

· Conduct journal club, clinical case discussion for postgraduate students.

· Conduct seminars, guest lectures and CME to impart the interdisciplinary nature of Biochemistry.

· To provide quality clinical chemistry laboratory services.

Biochemistry Department is well equipped with a Central research laboratory including Molecular Biology section, PG & UG practical halls, demonstration rooms, seminar hall, state of the- art Audio visual aids and a departmental library which has updated text books & reference books for the use of faculty, PG & UG students.

The department’s clinical Biochemistry section is equipped with fully automated analyzers, semi-automated analyzers, electrolyte analyzers, arterial blood gas analyzers, fully automated chemiluminescence analyzers for hormones, automated chemiluminescence analyzer, etc to evaluate organ profiles for the right diagnosis, monitor patient compliance and outcome of treatment.

The department has committed, qualified and experienced faculty who take well-prepared didactic lectures on all theory topics as prescribed by MCI. In addition, small group teaching, tutorials and integrated teaching are being conducted regularly and systematically. The faculty also encourages, motivate and prepare the students to participate and present research papers in conferences. Advance training is also imparted to post graduate students.

The faculty has many national and international publications to its credit and the department contributes immensely to the laboratory needs of the teaching hospital.
